food in colonial times
Corn was the main food used in almost every colonial meal. Ever since the Native Americans introduced the Europeans to corn, it has been used in many things. Women cooked cakes and bread using corn. A typical colonial meal would be stew consisting of corn, meat, and other vegetables like carrots, turnips, cabbage, and onions, that the family would eat often. The mother would usually make enough stew for the week. The family would just re-heat the stew and have it for their meals everyday until it was gone.
food preservation
Very few foods were available all year round. There was no refrigeration back then, so to keep the food from going bad, food would be smoked or salted.
